INTRODUCTION
CooperVision's Biofinity range is the world's most prescribed monthly contact lens family — worn by millions of people around the globe. But it is not a single product. It is a carefully built family of four lenses, each designed to address a specific prescription need, from straightforward myopia to extreme astigmatism that conventional lenses simply cannot correct. This guide explains each lens, what it does, and how to choose the right one for you.
THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND EVERY BIOFINITY LENS: AQUAFORM® TECHNOLOGY
All four lenses in the Biofinity family are built on the same foundation: Aquaform® Technology. Understanding it helps you understand why Biofinity lenses feel different from many other monthly lenses on the market.
Traditional silicone hydrogel lenses face a fundamental material challenge: silicone improves oxygen transmission, but it repels water — making early silicone hydrogel lenses uncomfortable and requiring surface coatings to function. CooperVision's Aquaform® Technology solved this by creating a proprietary network of long and short silicone chains with powerful hydrophilic arms that attract and anchor water molecules throughout the entire lens matrix — not just on the surface.
The result is a lens material that is naturally wettable without any surface coatings or added wetting agents. The lens is hydrated to twice its weight in water, maintaining moisture from core to surface all day long. Because less silicone is needed to achieve high oxygen transmissibility, the lens is also softer and more flexible than many silicone hydrogel alternatives.
Key Aquaform® Technology stats:
• 2× — Hydrated to twice its weight in water
• 25 million+ — Wearers globally experiencing Aquaform® comfort
• 9 out of 10 — Wearers satisfied with Biofinity® comfort after 4 weeks
Alongside Aquaform® Technology, all Biofinity sphere lenses incorporate the Aberration Neutralising System™ — an aspheric front surface designed to minimise optical imperfections commonly found in the human eye. The combined effect is crisp, clear vision that standard spherical lenses often cannot match, particularly in low-light conditions.
LENS 1: BIOFINITY®
The flagship — for myopia and hyperopia
Biofinity is where the family began. It is a monthly replacement silicone hydrogel lens designed for wearers who are short-sighted or long-sighted, and it is currently the world's most prescribed monthly contact lens. The lens is made from Comfilcon A — a material with an oxygen transmissibility (Dk/t) of 160, among the highest of any monthly lens — meaning eyes receive the oxygen they need to stay clear, white, and healthy throughout the day and even into extended wear periods.
With a water content of 48%, Biofinity strikes an optimal balance between moisture retention and structural integrity. The lens is approved for up to seven days and six nights of continuous wear for patients who require it, though daily wear with nightly removal is standard and recommended for most users.
Specifications:
• Material: Comfilcon A (Silicone Hydrogel)
• Water Content: 48%
• Oxygen Transmissibility: Dk/t = 160
• Replacement Schedule: Monthly (30 days)
• Extended Wear: Up to 7 days / 6 nights
• Sphere Power Range: -12.00D to +8.00D
Best for: Everyday myopia and hyperopia wearers seeking premium monthly comfort.
LENS 2: BIOFINITY® TORIC
For wearers with astigmatism
Biofinity Toric brings all the material benefits of Aquaform® Technology to wearers with astigmatism — a condition where the cornea is not perfectly round, causing blurred or distorted vision at all distances. The lens is built around CooperVision's proven Optimized Toric Lens Geometry™, a design that has been fitted to more patients than any other toric lens design in the market.
The key to Biofinity Toric's performance is its ballast design: a uniform horizontal thickness across the ballast area that maintains consistent lens orientation and resists rotation — the most common cause of blurred vision in toric lenses. When a toric lens rotates out of position, the astigmatism correction no longer aligns with the eye's axis, causing momentarily blurred vision. Biofinity Toric's stable design minimises this significantly.
The result speaks for itself: more subjects rated comfort throughout the day as much better or better with Biofinity Toric compared to their previous lenses after just one month of wear.
Specifications:
• Material: Comfilcon A (Silicone Hydrogel)
• Water Content: 48%
• Sphere Power Range: -9.00D to +6.00D
• Cylinder Powers: -0.75 to -2.25
• Axis Range: 10° to 180° (in 10° steps)
• Prescription Options: 37,000+ combinations
Best for: Astigmatic wearers who want a stable, comfortable monthly silicone hydrogel toric lens.
LENS 3: BIOFINITY® XR
For extreme myopia and hyperopia prescriptions
Biofinity XR exists to solve a problem that affects a significant number of contact lens wearers: their prescription is simply too strong for any conventional contact lens. Standard monthly silicone hydrogel lenses typically cover sphere powers from around -8.00D to +6.00D. For many people — particularly in Singapore and across Asia, where high myopia rates are among the highest in the world — their prescription falls well outside this range.
Biofinity XR extends the Biofinity platform to sphere powers from +15.00D to -20.00D — a range 1.5 times greater than many other monthly silicone hydrogel lenses. Together with standard Biofinity, the two lenses cover 99.9% of all spherical prescriptions worldwide. For wearers who have previously been told they cannot wear soft contact lenses due to their prescription, Biofinity XR is often the answer.
Crucially, Biofinity XR uses exactly the same Aquaform® Technology and Aberration Neutralising System™ as standard Biofinity — meaning high-prescription wearers receive no compromise in comfort, breathability, or optical quality.
Specifications:
• Material: Comfilcon A (Silicone Hydrogel)
• Water Content: 48%
• Sphere Power Range: -20.00D to +15.00D
• Prescriptions Covered: 99.9% of spherical Rx
• Oxygen Transmissibility: Dk/t = 160
• Replacement Schedule: Monthly (30 days)
Singapore note: Singapore has one of the highest rates of myopia in the world, with up to 80% of young adults affected — and a significant proportion developing high or extreme myopia (-6.00D and above). Biofinity XR was built for exactly this population.
Best for: Wearers with high myopia or hyperopia whose prescriptions exceed standard lens ranges.
LENS 4: BIOFINITY® TORIC XR
For high prescriptions with astigmatism
Biofinity Toric XR is the most specialised lens in the family — and for the patients who need it, there is often no alternative. It combines the extended sphere range of Biofinity XR with a significantly expanded cylinder and axis range, creating a toric lens for wearers who have both a high refractive error and astigmatism simultaneously.
Biofinity Toric XR is a fully cast-moulded, made-to-order lens — meaning each lens is custom manufactured to the patient's specific prescription. Despite this, the lens incorporates the same uniform horizontal ISO thickness and optimised ballast band design as standard Biofinity Toric, resulting in excellent rotational stability. In clinical evaluation, 97% of Biofinity XR Toric lenses showed less than 10° of rotation after six hours of wear — a remarkable result for a lens covering this prescription range.
For patients who have high astigmatism and high refractive error, Biofinity Toric XR extends the possibility of silicone hydrogel monthly contact lens wear to a group that has historically had very limited or no soft lens options.
Specifications:
• Sphere Power Range: -10.00D to +10.00D
• Cylinder Powers: -2.75 to -5.75 (0.50D steps)
• Axis Range: 5° to 180° (in 5° steps)
• Prescription Options: 16,000+ combinations
• Lens Type: Made to order
• Rotational Stability: 97% show less than 10° rotation at 6 hours
Best for: Wearers with both high prescriptions AND significant astigmatism — often those who believed soft lenses were not an option for them.
